Sudoku: Candidate Notes and Clean Number Placement

Sudoku is a classic 81-cell logic puzzle where players fill a 9x9 grid, use notes for possible digits, and solve by deduction across rows, columns, and boxes.

A familiar grid that still rewards discipline

Sudoku uses a 9x9 grid divided into nine smaller 3x3 boxes. The goal is to place numbers so that every row, every column, and every box contains 1 through 9 without repeating a digit. The rules are widely known, but the puzzle remains satisfying because a correct solution depends on restraint.

The most important habit is not filling numbers quickly. It is placing numbers only when the logic supports them. A single guess can create a hidden contradiction that appears much later, while one confirmed placement can unlock several new deductions.

This version includes direct cell selection and a Notes option, which makes it especially useful for players who like working through candidates carefully.

Controls and notes

Click the cell you want to fill, then click the number you want to place. If you are not certain, use the Notes button to mark possible numbers instead of committing. Notes are valuable because they let you preserve logic without risking a wrong entry.

A good note is specific. If a cell can only be 2 or 8, marking those two candidates helps. Filling a cell with every number from 1 to 9 creates visual noise and slows the solve. Use notes when a cell has a small set of realistic options.

After placing a final number, update nearby notes mentally. The row, column, and box all changed. That is where many new deductions appear.

A steady solving method

Start with obvious singles. Look for rows, columns, or boxes that are nearly complete. Then scan for hidden singles: a digit that can only go in one place within a box even if the cell itself has several possible candidates.

Next, compare pairs. If two cells in a row can only be the same two numbers, those numbers are blocked from the other cells in that row. The same idea applies to columns and boxes. You do not need advanced techniques for every puzzle, but recognizing simple pairs prevents random guessing.

If the board stops moving, switch the scan direction. Look row by row, then column by column, then box by box. A pattern missed in one view may become obvious in another.

Safer choices

The habit to watch is treating notes as decoration instead of evidence. If a note is not updated after new placements, it can mislead you. Another mistake is selecting a number because it appears to fit one area while ignoring the crossing row or column.

Players may also become attached to a hard section. When stuck, leave it alone and solve easier areas. Sudoku often opens indirectly.

If a contradiction appears, trace the most recent uncertain placement. The error usually began where logic gave way to assumption.

Where it fits

Sudoku suits players who enjoy quiet logic, number placement, candidate tracking, and puzzles that can be solved without speed pressure. It works well for focused play on desktop or mobile.

Players looking for action or visual novelty will probably want another option; the strongest part is the classic pleasure of deduction: mark possibilities, place confirmed digits, and watch the grid become inevitable.

Sudoku overview

The playing field is a grid with 9x9 cells, divided into smaller grids with a side of 3 cells. Thus, the entire playing field consists of 81 cells. At the beginning of the game, there are already some numbers in them (from 1 to 9). The player is required to fill in the free cells with numbers from 1 to 9 so that in each row, in each column and in each small 3 ×3 square, each digit would occur only once. There are multiple levels of difficulty you can choose. Beware of mistakes you can make.

How to Play

Click on the cell you want to fill and then click on a number you want there. You can click on the "Notes" button to mark possible numbers without placing them.
